If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand cease to function. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem as my greatest joy! (Psalm 137:5-6)

Stop the Biden administration from redividing Jerusalem and denying Israel’s sovereignty in her own capital.

The Biden Administration is pressuring Israel to accede to demands to open a new diplomatic office in Jerusalem representing the US to the Palestinian Authority. This is unprecedented. No nation has ever opened a diplomatic office to a third entity in the sovereign capital of another.  By doing so, the US is calling for Israel to abandon its sovereignty over Jerusalem, which even US law recognizes.

This also sets a dangerous precedent in the international community, that Jerusalem is not only not Israel’s sovereign capital, but that it is open to others setting up their own diplomatic missions to the Palestinian Authority. As much as it might be cloaked in the idea of a “two-state solution” to the ongoing conflict, it would do nothing toward the goal of bringing peace.  In fact, the very notion would serve to embolden the Palestinian Authority and other Palestinian Arab terror leaders that concessions can be achieved even without negotiation or recognition of Israel’s very legitimacy.

The idea of opening a diplomatic mission to the Palestinian Authority in central Jerusalem is dangerous, unprecedented, and contradicts both US law and international law.  While we recognize that Israel has the right to say “no” to the demands, it is inappropriate and unproductive for the US to continue to pressure Israel to achieve this goal.

As Christians and Jews, we affirm the centrality of Jerusalem in our faith, and the centrality of Jerusalem for God. “Thus said the LORD of Hosts: I am very jealous for Zion, I am fiercely jealous for her. Thus said the LORD: I have returned to Zion, and I will dwell in Jerusalem. Jerusalem will be called the City of Faithfulness, and the mount of the LORD of Hosts the Holy Mount.” (Zechariah 8:2-3)

We call upon President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary of State Blinken, to immediately abandon efforts to open a consulate to the Palestinian Authority in Jerusalem. If the US requires opening a diplomatic office to the Palestinian Authority, it should do so in Ramallah, the seat of the Palestinian Authority, alongside the diplomatic offices of dozens of other countries, but not in Israel’s eternal capital of Jerusalem.
